This article describes the City of Chicago's new 10-year contract with its building trade unions and highlights the fact that the agreement includes a provision to pay workers the "prevailing wage" paid to private sector building workers in the area. The Civic Federation is quoted in approval of the many cost-saving steps the agreement includes, but insists that because city benefits are so much more generous than the private sector, there are good reasons why the city should negotiate lesser wages than the prevailing wage.
