This article describes how the City of Chicago ranked first in the nation in 2000 for its proportion of downtown residences that were owner-occupied, and how the number of condos downtown continues to increase. It cites the Civic Federation’s view that the growth in residential properties downtown has been a major contributor to the trend of residential property taxes increasing faster than commercial and industrial taxes. Economic activity and security have also improved in the Central Business District and north of the Loop, the Federation said.
