Motorola Foundation Excellence in Public Service Award

August 04, 2010

The Civic Federation recently announced a call for nominations for the 19th Annual Motorola Foundation Excellence in Public Service Award. The Excellence in Public Service Award recognizes a non-elected government employee who has made an extraordinary impact on the quality of government services in state or local government. The award seeks to honor individuals who show dedication to a vision of quality management, leadership, and innovation that leads to lasting achievements and more effective government in Illinois.

Individuals eligible for nomination are currently serving as non-elected state or local government officials in Illinois, including department heads and chiefs of staff.

Recent past recipients of the Motorola Award include Illinois Board of Higher Education Executive Director Judy Erwin, current United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and past Chicago Transit Authority President Ron Huberman. Other notable recipients include past Illinois Department of Commerce & Community Affairs Director Pam McDonough, past Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas and Illinois Auditor General William Holland.

The award originated when NORBIC, a nonprofit economic development association, Crain’s Chicago Business, a business publication, and Motorola decided that it was a worthwhile endeavor to publicly recognize the City’s many hard-working public servants who were dedicated to improving the city.

The award was first presented in 1992 as the Motorola Excellence in Public Service Award. Illinois Issues later agreed to become a sponsor and the award was expanded to include state employees.

The Civic Federation has presented the award for the past four years with sponsorship from Motorola and the Motorola Foundation
